In Leh, Ladakh, there are literally hundreds of lodging options.  Choosing the best location has become more challenging due to the recent explosion in the number of guesthouses, homestays, and hotels.

I've included my top choices for lodging in Leh, whether you're a backpacker searching for somewhere affordable and practical or are willing to pay a little more for a family-run guesthouse to gain a local perspective. I have stayed at a number of places after visiting Ladakh twice for a total of 12 weeks.

Why Travel to Ladakh's Leh?

There is no place like it, with its contrast of dry desert-like slopes, snow-capped, soaring, rocky peaks, valleys carved out by braided rivers, and decaying monasteries perched on cliffs and hilltops.

There are many things to see and do in Ladakh, one of the remaining locations in India for genuine adventure. You may easily spend a lot of time there, climbing in the surreal Himalayas or traveling the renowned Silk Road.

When to Travel to Ladakh's Leh?

Since the summer months offer the greatest weather and the best conditions for touring the nearby peaks, valleys, cities, and attractions, Ladakh's high season lasts from June to September.

Outside of these months, the temperature drops, roads may become impassable owing to snow or landslides, and trekking becomes too risky. Although you may fly into Leh at any time of year, the roads are usually open from May to October.

Winter is a particularly severe season in Ladakh and should be avoided unless you are properly prepared, unless you are trying to pursue snow leopards.  Actually, you would need to make plans far in advance because the majority of lodgings close for the winter.

There are many different types of lodging available in Ladakh, regardless of your budget or preference for a more pleasant stay.

The majority of lodging is located in Leh, the region's main town and hub, and this is also where most travelers base themselves. I've listed my top recommendations for backpackers, low-budget adventurers, mid-range, and luxury travelers visiting Leh below.

Backpacker

Hostels are becoming more and more common in Leh. There are several independent hostels in addition to some of the major Indian hostel chains, such as GoStops and Zostel.  My favorite hostel in Leh is this one:

The Raybo Hostel is 1.2 kilometers from the Leh market

Raybo Hostel, unquestionably the greatest hostel in Leh, is a fantastic location to stay close to town and meet people from over the globe. It's a peaceful location in the Chubi neighborhood, far from the bustle of the market, yet it's only a fifteen-minute walk if you want to go in for some food.

With their own lighting and charging stations, as well as private toilets, the dorm beds were incredibly cozy.  Every morning, a hearty breakfast was served in the pleasant common area below. In addition, there was a garden where people could unwind and make new friends.

Spending limit

In Leh, there are countless options for affordable lodging.  Private rooms at the hundreds of largely family-run guest homes are reasonably priced. Usually modest establishments hidden down back streets, they have hospitable hosts.

The Peace Guest House

The Leh market is 250 km away.

During my recent trip to Leh, I was searching for somewhere to stay when I came across this guesthouse.  You can't get much closer to Leh market than here, which is tucked away down a small street off Upper Tukcha Road. Because everything was so close, I thought it was really convenient.

Although the facility is simple, the rooms were spacious, tidy, and cozy considering the low cost.  It offers good WiFi and a nice garden area to sit in.

They serve some simple food and beverages on-site, but I've never eaten there because there are so many other restaurants in the area. I was pleased enough to return, and the personnel was welcoming and accommodating.

This guest house, which is owned by a very kind and helpful woman, is located down Upper Tukcha Road and has a very pleasant, homey vibe. Being a family guesthouse, it provides a glimpse into the locals and seems almost like a homestay.
